Mick's Quotes

These are the "motivational" quotes that Mick Wilcox read to keep us going during the Dodentocht. Some worked, some did not, but all were appreciated as they cut the mindless boredom of non stop walking with a topic to discuss for two, maybe three hours.

One of the strange things about living in the world is that it is only now and then one is quite sure one is going to live forever and ever and ever. One knows it sometimes when one gets up at the tender, solemn dawn-time and goes out and stands alone and throws ones head far back and looks up and up and watches the pale sky slowly changing and flushing and marvelous unknown things happening until the East almost makes one cry out and one heart stands still at the strange, unchanging majesty which has been happening every morning for thousands and thousands and thousands of years. One knows it then for a oment or so. And one knows it sometimes when one stands by oneself in a wood at sunset and the mysterious deep gold stillness slanting through and under the branches seems to be saying slowly again and again something one cannot quite hear, however much one tries. Then sometimes the immense quiet of the dark blue night with millions of stars waiting and watching makes one sure; and sometimes a sound of far off music makes it true; and sometimes a look in someone's eyes.

There have been other nights like this one when I have awakened knowing that I have been fighting with something for hours. A terrible struggle with something. I am exhausted. I have won -- I know that because I am here, but I know too that it will come again.

We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.

- TS Eliot "Little Gidding"

What ever you have heard about me is true. I change the rules and do what I want to do. I'm in love with God it is the only way because you and I know we've got to die someday. You think I am crazy and you're probably right but I am going to have fun and you're mother fucking right, the right to fight you're a double drag fool, I am going to another life, how about you?

- Prince "1999"

The heights by great men reached and kep, were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept were toiling upward in the night.

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Only those who will risk going to far can possibly find out how far one can go.
